Ambient relative humidity affects the distribution pattern of rotary fertilizer spreaders. When the ambient relative humidity exceeds the critical relative humidity for the fertilizer material, the fertilizer becomes hygroscopic, and the coefficient of friction of the fertilizer on the impeller and other components changes. This affects the length of time the material stays on the impeller, thus skewing the pattern. Fertilizer materials that are fully soluble in cold water exhibit different patterns at different humidity levels, but the patterns tend to be stable at a given humidity since the coefficient of friction changes while very little buildup occurs. Fertilizer materials that contain insoluble components gradually build up on the impeller arid other parts, thus causing a gradual shift in pattern at a given humidity level.
