Extract: A study was designed to evaluate the nutrient content of day care lunches and snacks. Three types of feeding systems were compared: bag lunch, catered, and onsite kitchen. Size of the day care center and estimated median family income did not substantially influence the nutrient content of meals. Nutrient content, particularly of calcium, vitamin A, and riboflavin, was related to the type of feeding system. Foods available in onsite kitchen centers provided higher nutrient content than catered programs. Catered programs, in turn, provided higher nutrient content than bag lunches. (author)
