Functional consequences of maternal malnutrition

The purpose of this paper is to present a review of the functions that are altered in malnourished pregnant and lactating women. It summarizes the nutritional determinants of low birth weight and discusses some of the biological mechanisms through which these determinants might be operating. The impact of undernutrition during lactation is also covered.
