In an epidemiological survey of blood pressure in 9321 Belgium males, a highly significant positive correlation was found between serum calcium and both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. A correlation also was noted between 24-hour urinary calcium excretion and blood pressure. No positive correlation between 24-hour sodium excretion and blood pressure was shown; nor was a negative correlation shown between 24-hour potassium excretion and blood pressure. Urinary calcium excretion depends on calcium intake, dietary protein, saturated fat, and vitamin D. No significant relation between calcium and blood pressure was shown in women studied. (rkm)
