Nutritional status and severity of diarrhoea among pre-school children in rural Nigeria

Although the frequency of diarrhea did not increase due to underweight or stunted growth in a group of 343 Nigerian preschool children, aged 6-32 months, 47% more episodes of diarrhea were observed in children who were wasted. Pre-existing malnutrition also prolonged the duration of diarrhea; diarrheal attacks were 79% longer in wasted children, 37% longer in those who were stunted and 33% longer in children who were underweight. These preschoolers suffered 1-4 attacks during the 3 month examination period, spending an average of 10.5% of this time with diarrhea. The findings suggest that wasted children who have experienced recent weight loss may have impaired resistance to intestinal pathogens.
