Influence of vitamin E supplementation on antipyrine clearance in the Cebus monkey
1990
Meydani, M. | Greenblatt, D.J.
Clearance of antipyrine was assessed to evaluate the effect of dietary vitamin E supplementation on the drug-metabolizing enzyme system in young (4-6 yrs) and older (15-20 yrs) Cebus monkeys (Cebus albifrons). The monkeys were supplemented with 75 IU vitamin E for 43 days. Plasma vitamin E and plasma antipyrine clearance and elimination half-life were measured before and after supplementation. Vitamin E supplementation increased plasma vitamin E in both age groups. In the young animals, vitamin E supplementation significantly (p<0.05) increased antipyrine clearance. The effect of dietary vitamin E on the decreased half-life and increased clearance of antipyrine became more significant when both age groups were combined. These findings are consistent with the concept that dietary antioxidants enhance clearance of drugs undergoing hepatic oxidative metabolism.
