Conductivity dispersion of variable-charge soils and its relation to the kind of electrolytes

We measured the electrical conductivity of the clay fraction of three variable-charge soils in 10 N NaNO3, Ca(NO3)2, KCl, Na2SO4, and CaCl2 solutions, using alternating current of frequencies ranging from 300 Hz to 200 kHz and direct current. The conductivity increased with the increase in frequency and clay concentration. The relative conductivity, i.e., the ratio of the conductivity at a given frequency to that at 300 Hz, was largest in NaNO3 systems and smallest in CaCl2 systems. The difference in conductivity dispersion among soils and among ions was interpreted in terms of the firmness of attachment between the ion and the clay particle.
