Clinical signs of magnesium deficiency
1979
Clinicians are increasingly finding cases of magnesium deficiency in patients with chronic gastrointestinal tract disease or disorders requiring parenteral nutrition. Two case histories are detailed. The deficiency develops when there is insufficient dietary magnesium intake in relation to losses of the mineral or increased metabolic requirements. Symptoms are most severe in the young. First signs are weakness and failure to thrive, followed by neuromuscular hyperirritability, twitching, and eventually paralysis of selected muscle groups (periocular or of pharynx and esophagus).
