Tissue iron, copper and zinc levels in offspring of iron-sufficient and iron-deficient rats
1981
Sherman, Adria Rothman | Tissue, Nancy Tschiember
Four groups of young rats from dams on iron-deficient or control diets were weaned to the same or opposite diets to study the effects of iron nutriture on iron, copper and zinc in tissue. Iron deficiency caused impaired growth, reduced iron levels in liver, spleen and kidney, and lower hemoglobin and hematocrit values, as well as hepatic copper levels 1.5 times higher than controls at 2 days, and 3 times higher at weaning. Copper concentrations declined with the control diet, but not in iron-deficient rats. Zinc concentrations were only slightly disturbed by iron deficiency. These results indicate that iron deficiency in utero, during suckling or after weaning contributes to abnormal copper concentrations in liver and spleen.
