Seventh-day Adventists: dietary standards and concerns

Seventh-Day Adventists number almost seven million adherents worldwide. The membership in North America is approximately 750,000. While the eating habits of Seventh-Day Adventists will be discussed in some detail, it is recognized that many other individuals and groups in North America and elsewhere in the world, have similar patterns of food consumption. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA, 1989) estimates there are seven million vegetarians in the United States today. This article discusses the dietary standards of Seventh-Day Adventists and major areas of concern regarding inadequate labeling of food products. It also emphasizes that the food industry must continue to accommodate the shifting needs of a society whose food patterns are changing.
