The benefits of assessing community needs for health curriculum development are stressed, and techniques which can be used to modify the typical needs assessment procedures to ensure more accurate, useful data as well as staff commitment and growth are described. These techniques include conceptualizing need areas, gathering quantitatvie data, observation, group discussion, and survey feedback. Sensitivity to the needs assessment process provides a basis for program decisions.
