Effect of tobacco etch virus on yield and quality of some varieties of flue-cured tobacco

Flue-cured tobacco varieties Coker (C) 187-H, C 298, C 319, Hicks, McNair 30, NC (North Carolina) 95, NC 2512, NC 2326, Speight (Sp) G-7, Sp G-35 and Virginia 115 were compared for their reaction to tobacco etch virus (TEV). the yield of NC 2512 was reduced by only 3% while the yield of the other varieties was reduced by 6-18%. quality, based on prices currently paid for different grades of tobacco, was not significantly affected for any variety. severity of symptom expression was not consistently associated with amount of yield reduction.
