In 1982 Federal expenditures for food assistance increased 15%. Recession, high food prices, and a poor economy were major factors contributing to expanded food assistance needs. The Food Stamp Program increased 20% due to increased participation and higher food prices per foods in the Thrifty Food Plan. Surplus foods in federal warehouses were distributed to the needy. Child Nutrition Programs expenditures increased 11.9%. This was due to increased reimbursement rates, increased number of meals served and increased reduced price and free meals served. Supplemental food programs comprised of WIC and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program had increases of 14.8% and 16% respectively. (kbc)
