The contribution of fat loss to weight loss in cancer
1980
Axelrod, Lloyd | Costa, G (Giovanni)
Weight loss in cancer patients adversely affects their prognosis, yet its cause is not well understood. Anorexia and reduced food intake contribute to, but do not completely explain, weight loss in cancer patients. Weight loss may be due to a loss of fat, over and above protein losses. Studies of healthy fasting subjects suggest that the principle source of energy and weight loss is adipose tissue; as fasting continues, fuels from fat replace protein-derived fuels in the body's effort to conserve protein during caloric restriction. Observations of animal and human cancers also support the conclusion that accelerated weight loss is due to accelerated lipolysis. Further study is needed to define the mechanism and metabolic basis by which the rate of lipolysis is increased in cancer patients.
