Pilot electromyographic studies of resting oral activity in obese and normal subjects

The relationship of non-nutritive oral activity to obesity was investigated in 35 obese and 28 normal weight women, by attaching electrodes to the corners of the mouth while subjects were not allowed food, drink, conversation or smoking. Total number and time of movements were recorded for 2 hour observation periods at various times. Total activity was not found to be significantly different for the 2 groups, although the oral patterns differed in that peak activity was reached sooner in normal subjects. The absence of environmental cues that stimulate eating seems to eliminate the differences in resting activity between obese and normal subjects.
