Soil adsorption of 2,4-D as affected by the clay mineralogy

The adsorption of 2,4-D has been studied obtaining adsorption isotherms on 22 soils by the batch equilibration technique. Fitting the adsorption data to the Freundlich equation three adsorption capacity were calculated at low (Kf or Cs 1), medium (Cs 4.5) and high (Cs 30) 2,4-D concentration. The adsorption capacity and intensity factors obtained in this study resulted in according with those reported by other authors. From the simple regression analysis between adsorption capacities and soil properties it was shown that organic matter and free iron contents of soils favoured the adsorption, whereas pH, surface area and clay content decreased the adsorption of 2,4-D. By dividing the soils according to their clay mineralogy it was shown that the soils properties determining the adsorption capacity were different for soils with phyllosilicates as essential clay components than for soils with iron oxides as major clay components.
