A technical overview is presented on the relationship between malnutrition and enhanced infection risk. Associations among infection, malnutrition, poverty, low education, poor sanitation, and sociocultural deprivation are discussed. Specific attention is given to: infections in malnourished individuals; immunocompetence in malnutrition; nutritional and immunological effects of infection; and effective nutritional interventions. The association between obesity and immunity and the wide-ranging implications of malnutrition on immunity also are addressed.
