Irrigation and wildlife in the Southern and Central Great Plains
1982

Extract: Because irrigation has and still is encouraging conversion of native ranges to cropland, it leads to a loss of or reduction in many native wildlife species, which are replaced by species better adapted to using crops and crop residues. Drafting of groundwater has been implicated in the loss of riparian habitats on the southern High Plains; Sandhill wetlands of Nebraska also are sensitive to groundwater removal. Irrigation of the southern High Plains exerts both positive and negative effects on playa habitats.
