Impact of food laws, regulations, and standards on world food supply

National and international food laws, regulations, and standards influence marketing and distribution of food between countries and have an impact on the world food supply. Consumer protection is the basis for all food laws, but these laws vary widely among countries. Laws regarding additives, pesticides, packaging, and labeling protect consumers and influence export trade; German and Japanese food laws are described. Health and sanitary regulations vary, and barriers such as the lemon war, the Netherlands turkey regulations, and the Germany beef regulations can affect world trade. International harmonization of standards is desirable, and steps have been taken to develop such standards. Products which have international standards, or for which standards are being elaborated, include milk, milk products, fruit juices, frozen foods, cocoa products, chocolate, fats and oils, processed fruits and vegetables, and processed meats.
