Guidelines for nutrition labelling--Codex Alimentarius Commission
1981
The most recent draft of Guidelines for Nutritional Labeling being prepared by the international Codex Committee on Food Labeling, is detailed. The guidelines recommend procedures for the nutritional labeling of all foods. More detailed provisions may be developed for dietary foods. Nutrient labeling should be mandatory for foods for which nutritional claims are made, and for certain foods whose nutritional value has been considerably modified. The guidelines call for a declaration of food energy, protein, carbohydrate, fat, and any other nutrient for which a nutrition claim is made or which is considered relevant to maintaining good nutritional status. Other guidelines are provided for breakdown-labeling of carbohydrate, fatty acid, minerals, and vitamins (i.e., for nutrient density). Educational information should not be used in place of nutrient labeling, but guidelines are given for its appropriate use. (wz)
