Nitrate/nitrite: Knowledge, attitudes and practices of rural Nebraskans

Extract: Because of the risk of methemoglobinemia (MetHb) in infants, public health services in the United States have adopted maximal allowance standards of 10 ppm nitrate nitrogen in public water supplies. These levels are being exceeded in several rural and urban areas of Nebraska as well as elsewhere in the United States and the world. The purpose of this survey was to determine knowledge, attitudes and practices of rural Nebraskans regarding issues related to nitrate and nitrite intake by humans. Home extension club members in 4 counties in Nebraska were used as the target population. Computed scores for knowledge of nitrate sources in foods, general knowledge, concern for ingestion by humans and precautionary practices against ingestion of nitrate were all low. There was no correlation between these scores and the presence of "at risk" populations in the home or education of the respondent. The major sources of information were the Cooperative Extension Services, newspapers, both local and those with statewide distribution and television and radio. Recommendations for target issues in further education campaigns were made. (author)
