Workshops designed to foster the skills and concepts needed to teach comprehensive health education in public schools were initiated in South Carolina. The goals of the course were to enable teachers to identify health problems in the classroom; integrate health education into school activities; focus on the development of good physical and mental health; and be aware of health services and how to use them. Some of the topics of the program were learning disabilities, dental health, substance abuse, nutrition, child development, family planning, diseases, physical fitness and teenage pregnancy. Teachers were tested at the beginning and end of the workshops; results showed a marked increase in skills, awareness and interest in teaching health education.
