Nutrition game plans for athletes
1982
Smith, Nathan J.
Athletes must eat enough food to maintain body weight but do not need to increase their overall nutrient intake. Suggested nutrient distribution is: 55-58% carbohydrate, 30-33% fat, and 13-14% protein. Water is the ideal beverage and is necessary to replace body fluids lost through perspiration. Thirst is a poor indicator of fluid needs; weight maintenance is a more appropriate indicator. Pre-game meal recommendations suggest a relatively high carbohydrate, moderate protein intake and a relatively low intake of fat, salt, and fiber. Careful meal planning is essential during extended competitions that require continued peak performance and during training. (kbc)
