Dimensionally stable electrode (DSA) was prepared by coating Ru⁴⁺ and Ir⁴⁺ on various anodic TiO₂ substrates. The TiO₂ substrates were prepared using three anodization techniques; micro-arc oxidation, synthesis of TiO₂ nanotubes and formation of a barrier layer. Micro-arc oxidation at high potential produced irregular micropores. With nanotube synthesis, well-defined nanotubular pores were formed at relatively low potentials. To form the barrier layer, an oxide film was prepared in a single H₃PO₄ solution. Among the DSAs synthesized on the anodic substrates, the micropore structures showed the lowest overpotential for O₂ evolution, indicating this DSA to be most suitable as an electrode for water splitting.
