Junk food in our schools? A look at student spending in school vending machines and concessions
1977
Crawford, Louise
Extract: Changes were made in the types of foods sold through vending machines and concessions in six secondary schools in the South Okanagan. No special attempt was made to educate students about the nutritive values of products sold. The introduction of an apple vending machine led to a 27% drop in chocolate bar sales in one large high school. The replacement of candy and chocolate bars by nuts, seeds and grain products led to a 23% drop in sales from vending machines in five secondary schools. When pop was replaced by milk in vending machines, student spending dropped six percent. Introduction of milk to schools which had sold only pop led to a 42% drop in pop sales.
