The "prudent diet" and its effect on lipoprotein profiles in 23 outpatients with either type IIb or type IV hyperlipoproteinemia were investigated. Dietary restrictions were: a decrease in fat intake (30-35% of total energy); an increased polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acid ratio (from 0:4 to 1:0); a decreased cholesterol intake; and an increase in fiber and carbohydrate intakes. Overweight patients were encouraged to limit energy intakes. Lipid values were measured prior to and 6 months after dietary modifications. In patients with type IIb hyperlipoproteinemia, diet produced a fall in total cholesterol in 12 out of 13 patients. Both total cholesterol and triglycerides decreased and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol increased in 8 out of 10 patients with type IV hyperlipoproteinemia. The prudent diet appears to be associated with improvements in lipid profiles of moderately hyperlipidemic patients. (ds)
