Ammonia absorption in a vertical sprayer at low ammonia partial pressures

In this article, ammonia (NH3) removal efficiency as affected by stripping factor, air mean retention time (0.8, 1.1, 1.7, 2.8, and 8.1 s), and NH3 inlet concentration (5, 15, and 50 ppmv) was evaluated using a sprayer unit called the diffusion-coagulation-separation (DCS) system. The NH3 removal efficiency was calculated from the NH3 concentrations measured from both air and water streams. The DCS system was found to effectively remove 84% of NH3 from the air stream at a stripping factor value of 0.5 or when the retention time of the air was 8.1 s. An empirical equation for NH3 removal efficiency as a function of stripping factor and inlet NH3 concentration was derived.
