Cola drinks for rehydration--not recommended for diarrhea
1987
A brief technical commentary notes that, while cola drinks are widely promoted as rehydration solutions for acute diarrhea, they are unsuited for this purpose, having an electrolyte content that is very low and an osmolality that is too high. Data are summarized to illustrate that cola drinks do not permit adequate electrolyte replacement, and that their high osmolality may induce an osmotic diarrhea that would worsen the situation.
