Time for a Fresh Look at Nuclear?
2006
Kidd, Stephen W
The revival of interest in nuclear power has brought forward a backlash from those opposed to any expansion of its use. The origin of the civil nuclear sector in military programmes continues to be a problem in explaining the industry to the public. Despite improved operating performances in recent years, combined with an excellent safety record, there remain difficulties in getting the case across. Not much has changed from the past in the more recent arguments raised against nuclear, but the rise of renewable energy sources and the interest in non-carbon emitting sources as a whole provides a new backdrop. It is possible to see some common ground being developed between nuclear and renewable advocates, such that they may be seen as complementary rather than competitive solutions to energy needs.
