Vitamin D status of the elderly in relation to age and exposure to sunlight

A 56-week nutrition survey was conducted with 929 elderly people (413 females, 516 males; 450 of ages 65-74, 479 at or above age 75) living in their own homes in 8 areas of Britain. The study examined the data on plasma levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) relative to age group, degree of seasonal variation, and exposure to sunlight. Levels of 25-OHD were found to be significantly higher in the summer than in winter, and to be correlated with exposure to sunlight. Data treatment indicated that 25-OHD levels decreased with increasing age in both sexes, and approached the same level (ca. 10 ng/mL) at about age 95. The decreasing trend of 25-OHD with increasing age may be associated with observed occurrence of osteomalacia among elderly people and the increasing incidence of femoral neck fractures with age.
