Curse of the black spot: spotting negatively correlates with fitness in black grouse Lyrurus tetrix

Blacks spots are sometimes found on white undertail feathers of black grouse. Spots at the tips of feathers were negatively related to survival and mating success, but no patterns were found for spots further down. Tip spots seem to relate to some component of condition, but the precise mechanisms are not known.
