Relation between erythrocyte selenium concentrations and glutathione peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.9) activities of New Zealand residents and visitors to New Zealand
1979

One hundred four healthy subjects living in a low-soil selenium (Se) area were measured for erythrocyte (E), plasma, and whole blood Se concentrations and glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) activity. Subjects included 104 healthy New Zealanders, 64 surgical patients, and 52 overseas subjects. Blood Se concentrations mirrored dietary intake; E Se was greater than plasma Se; plasma Se was a smaller proportion of G Se in patients compared with controls. GSHPx was different in all subject groups. Plasma Se remains the most immediate index for short-term changes in Se status and E Se and GSHPx for long term changes. (kbc)
