Relationship Between Plant Respiration and Seedling Vigor in Zea mays L
1972
Cantrell, R. P. | Hodges, H. F. | Keim, W. F.
Respiration rates in Zea mays L. were determined at different stages of seed germination and seedling development. Varying lengths of pregerminatiofi heat treatment were used to create different degrees of seed quality. A high positive correlation (r = +.930) was observed between 24-hour kernel respiration rates and seedling vigor. A low correlation (r = +.270) was observed between roottip respiration rate of the young seedlings and seedling vigor. A negative relationship was found between seedling shoot respiration rate and seedling vigor. Low-quality seeds were more susceptible to injury of the respiratory system, as shown by the addition of an uncoupling agent, than were good-quality seeds.
