A proton microprobe for energy-dispersive PIXE-analysis has been used to measure elemental distributions of sulphur and other elements in roots of Tagetes patula L. by making a line-scan along the diameter of the cross-section. Higher concentrations of phosphorus and sulphur were found in or near the phloem. In addition the endodermis contained an increased sulphur concentration. The results obtained and future possibilities for this kind of investigation are discussed.
