Humoral immune responses in parasitized, malnourished children
1984
Seshi, B. | Purtilo, D.T.
The focus of this chapter is on humoral immunity and parasitism in malnourished individuals. Immunoregulation of antibody production due to alterations in subsets of T-suppressor and T-helper cells are considered. The contributions of viruses and other parasites in diminishing the humoral immune response are also discussed. The authors also summarize morphological findings in individuals with protein-calorie malnutrition. Specific topics covered include: 1) nutritional depletion of the thymus-dependent system; 2) the secretory immune system; 3) mechanisms parasites employ to escape immune destruction; 4) opportunistic infectious agents in protein calorie malnutrition; and 5) nutritionally acquired immune deficiency and viral oncogenesis.
