Coextruded plastics leading in search for new packaging
1983
Terwilliger, Frank H.
Food packaging must: be economical; offer a stable shelf life of at least a year; be microwaveable, light weight, and convenient; and be better than its competition. Coextruded plastics (a multi-layered laminated sheet) appears to be a product that meets these criteria. The plastic can be shaped to match all the capabilities of glass or metal cans. These plastics require much less energy to produce and therefore cost almost 1/2 less than conventional materials. However, major research and development is required before mass production can begin and decisions will have to be made regarding: packaging constructs; package/process compatibility; package/food compatibility; package endurance and quality control procedures.
