Prevalence of Theileria spp. and tick infestation in sheep in Karnataka

The prevalence of Theileria spp. infection and ticks was studied in sheep in eight districts of Karnataka (South India). Blood samples and ticks were collected from 110 sheep during a period from March 2015 to February 2016. Microscopic examination of Giemsa stained blood smears revealed Theileria spp. organisms in 53.63% of sheep. The parasitemia ranged between 1.0 to 1.2 and 0.1 to 0.3% in clinical and carrier sheep respectively. Out of 692 ticks collected, Haemaphysalis kutchensis (51.44%) was predominant species followed by Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides (30.20%), H. intermedia (7.36%), H. bispinosa (6.06%) and R. sanguineus (4.91%).
