Comparison of vacuum and belt seeders for vegetable planting

Two precision vacuum seeders were compared with a precision belt seeder in laboratory tests using seeds from five vegetable crops (cabbage, carrot, cucumber, onion, and spinach). There were no significant differences in seed placement uniformity with carrot or onion seed. One of the vacuum seeders delivered spinach seed most uniformly. The belt seeder delivered cabbage seed most uniformly. With cucumber seed, the two vacuum seeders resulted in much better uniformity than the belt seeder. Cucumber seed is flat arid elongated, thus it is difficult to singulate with a belt seeder. Each vacuum seeder was compared independently with the precision belt seeder in replicated field tests of vegetable crops (cabbage, broccoli, cantaloupe, and carrot). In the field, there were few differences in stand or yield.
