Healthy eating--a human development intervention perspective
1981
D'Augelli, Anthony R.
A human development model to promote healthy eating habits is presented as an approach to nutrition education and treatment of obesity. Some of the limitations of the psychological approach to obesity research are viewed as: a lack of relevance between reality and experimentation; lack of attention to situational influences on response patterns; artificiality of studying the characteristics of the obese outside their normal environments; the lack of appropriateness of psychological intervention strategies; the dichotomy between standardized or individualized treatment; and the fact that treatment is more difficult than prevention. The human development model is based on 2 critical assumptions--the changing nature of the lifespan and the occurrence of life events that provide entry points for intervention. The models suggest goals for intervention which focus on optimization of people, i.e., helping people to develop themselves, and to develop more satisfying environments. (cj)
