Meadow hay production as influenced by nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization

Nitrogen is almost universally limiting for maximum production in grass meadow, while phosphorus is occasionally so. Fertilizer management decisions involve determining the rate and date of application and source of nutrients to be used. Rate of application should be based on a soil test and the yield goal for eadh meadow. Under certain conditions fall-topdresedd N and P can be superior to spring application. However, N should only be spring-applied on shallow, sandy or wet soils due to potential leaching and/or volatilization losses. Nutrient sources appear equally effective; therefore, that source costing the least per unit of nutrient should be selected.
