Adult-onset diabetics show atherogenic lipid pattern
1979
Recent studies by Dr. Allan Kennedy and his associates at Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, Northern Ireland strengthen the link between low high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) levels and the increased risk of atherosclerosis among adult-onset diabetics. In tests of 98 maturity-onset, 94 juvenile-onset and 177 nondiabetic control patients, all had similiar serum-total cholesterol concentrations. However, serum-HDL-cholesterol levels were significantly lower among both men and women with adult-onset diabetes than among patients of either sex with juvenile-onset diabetes and among controls over 40. Also, diabetics on oral agents had significantly lower HDL levels than those on insulin or diet alone.
