Mothers' milk: Environmentalists' stalking-horse
1979
Breast feeding has become a battleground of environmental issues. The dumping of polychlorinated and polybrominated biphenyls (PCBs and PBBs) and other pesticides into the food chain over the past decade may be dangerous to breast fed infants. Suggestions that human milk is unfit for consumption are a basic message of the Environmental Defense Fund. Proponents in the La Leche League cite the measurable benefits of breast feeding. A study is being conducted to monitor physical growth, neurological development, and frequency and severity of infections among 900 infants during the first six months of life.
