Technical assistance gets results

USDA's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) offers technical assistance to states to help them find ways to store, handle, and distribute USDA-donated foods for less money and better results. Once a state asks for assistance, a professional food consultant under contract to USDA conducts a thorough review of the state's system, identifies problems and suggests solutions. Alabama, Texas, and the District of Columbia are cited as case studies. Savings generally are passed on to the local users of USDA-donated foods. Other benefits include: reducing the costs of storing and distributing donated foods; coordinating purchases; avoiding missed opportunities, and streamlining administrative costs. National food distribution conferences keep states up-to-date with information and sharing of common problems. (kbc)
