By acidification of an aqueous solution of Rb₂MoO₄ with sulfuric acid the rubidium trimolybdatosulfate Rb₂SMo₃O₁₃ · 0.72 H₂O is formed. A compound with the same composition and evidently the same structure but free of crystal water is obtainable by melting a mixture of Rb₂SO₄ and MoO₃ in molar ratios 1:3. The X-ray structure investigation shows the anion to be built up from double chains of MoO₆ octahedra. Always three neighbouring octahedra are linked about common vertices with one SO₄ tetrahedron. The tetrahedra are alternating above and below the double chain. - Rb₂SMo₃O₁₃ is the first known macromolecular heteropolymolybdate.
