Qualitative and quantitative development of pioneer vegetation on the Danube within the scope of the Bad Deutsch-Altenburg and Witzelsdorf pilot projects | Qualitative und quantitative Entwicklung der Pioniervegetation an der Donau im Bereich der Pilotprojekte Bad Deutsch-Altenburg und Witzelsdorf

Pioneer vegetation on dynamic gravel banks and mudflats ranks among Austria’s highly endangered habitats and was originally represented with several plant communities over large areas along the Danube. Such dynamic habitats have sharply declined in area as a result of the Danube regulation and can currently only be found in accretion zones of islands and slip-off slopes of such sites. The outlined evaluation stems from the question of whether and how the renaturation projects implemented so far by the Donau-Auen National Park administration and via Donau, such as the Bad Deutsch-Altenburg and Witzelsdorf pilot projects, affect the incidence of pioneer species on gravel sites.
