An experiment was carried out at under the High Ganges River floodplain soils to examine the effects of organic manure viz. press mud and farmyard manure (FYM) in combination with inorganic fertilizer on productivity of sugarcane. Application of organic manure along with chemical fertilizer increased leaf area index (LAI), total dry matter (TDM), chlorophyll contents and N, P, K and S concentrations in leaf tissues as compared with inorganic fertilizer alone. The maximum cane yield and sugar yield of 119.14 and 10.99 t ha⁻¹, respectively were recorded in the treatment that received press mud @ 15 t ha⁻¹ accompanied with 25% less of recommended inorganic fertilizer i.e., N113, P39, K68, S26 and Zn2.3 kg ha⁻¹. Result also revealed that the effects of press mud were significantly alike with the other treatments that received recommended inorganic fertilizer only and 25 % less of inorganic fertilizer with FYM @ 15 tha⁻¹. The organic carbon, total N and available P, K and S contents of soil increased slightly due to incorporation of organic manure in soils. It is indicated that 25% chemical fertilizer could be saved by use of press mud or FYM @ 15 tha⁻¹ for obtaining higher yield of sugarcane without deterioration of soil fertility.
