Setting new diet and health directions
1986
White, P.L.
In a plea for a national nutrition policy based on diet and health achievement/maintenance instead of risk avoidance by nutrition intervention, this article outlines needed research emphasis and direction. The feeling appears to be that public policy is ahead of actual research in such areas as fat/cancer, fiber/cancer, and sodium/hypertension. Because diet is a moderate risk factor in coronary heart disease/cancer, the author feels that too much emphasis is placed on diet as a risk reducer. Achieving desirable weight and exercise/diet habits will be more beneficial for health. The author lists nine areas in which he believes current research will influence current and future policies.(jd-b)
