Diet surveys and nutrition education programs were carried out with 50 mothers through parent teacher associations in Coimbatore, India. A questionnaire was administered to the mothers before and after the education program to determine knowledge about the importance of food, adequate diets, and consequences of inadequate diets. Based on the dietary practices and initial nutrition knowledge of the mothers, relevant nutrition themes and suitable teaching methods were selected. Classes were conducted for 2 hours a week for 5 months. Improvements in the use of foods such as pulses, milk and milk products, green leafy vegetables, and raw vegetables and fruits were evident after nutrition education. Information is presented on cooking practices of the mothers before and after the education program and on the income level and occupational and educational status of the families.
