Extract: Recent trends in rural and urban employment suggest the need for new economic development strategies and policies. If prototype counties can be identified, strategies and policies can be developed for each prototype and applied to other counties. In this study, all counties in the North Central United States are classified into six prototypes on the basis of sectoral employment distributions in 1970. The relationship between prototype and selected county characteristics is examined with a discriminant model. While the discriminant model is statistically significant, county employment distributions appear to be too complex for classification into a small number of prototype counties.
