Sugar content of selected pharmaceuticals

Sugars present in medications as flavoring agents can contribute to total caloric intake and diabetics may tolerate various sugars differently; therefore 79 drug manufacturers were contacted through a mail survey. Data on sugar forms and content were tabulated for selected drugs from 67 of the responding manufacturers. Qualitative and quantitative information provided, covers manufacturer's name, drug name, the form of the sugar, and the sugar content. Sugar content generally ranged from 0 to slightly less than 0.95 g/ml. Specific trade names of the drugs are identified because of variations in the composition of the sweetener used by different manufacturers. These data should assist practitioners in estimating the significance of the caloric contribution of these drugs for diabetics. (wz)
